The Clean Energy Future Legislation

The Federal Government has introduced the Clean Energy Future Legislation, effective 1 July 2012, to place a price on carbon. The carbon price is expected to be passed from the largest emitters through the supply chain and on to customers, promoting a shift to low-carbon alternatives.

How the price of LPG will change

From 1 July 2012, the invoiced price of the LPG that we supply to you will include the impact of the Clean Energy Future Legislation.

The adjustment to charges will apply to non-transport use LPG (e.g. LPG used for residential, commercial and BBQ purposes). The adjustment will include the price set by the Federal Government on the carbon in LPG, and the increased costs incurred in the LPG supply chain as a result of the introduction of a carbon price to the Australian market.

Other trade and international factors may also impact prices from 1 July 2012. We’ll let you know about any price changes through our normal communication channels such as bill messages.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Will the carbon price impacts be itemised on my bill?

There will be no separate carbon price on bills for Origin LPG customers. It will be included in your bundled price.

What is the carbon price set by the Federal Government on LPG?

As the price on the carbon in LPG is set by the Federal Government under Excise, Customs and Fuel Tax Legislation, the Australian Taxation Office is best placed to advise you of the current rates. LPG suppliers also incur other supply chain costs as a result of the carbon price scheme.

How are the carbon costs of LPG different to electricity or natural gas?

Electricity, natural gas and non-transport use LPG are all covered under the Clean Energy Future Legislation. Each energy product has a different carbon exposure and operates in different market structures. This means the impact of the carbon price mechanisms on your charges will be different for each energy type.

I’m a Green LPG customer. Will I be impacted by carbon costs?

Yes. Green LPG customers will also have the impact of the carbon scheme included in their LPG price from 1 July 2012. This is because all non-transport use LPG is subject to the price set by the Federal Government on the carbon in LPG, and the increased costs incurred in the LPG supply chain as a result of the introduction of a carbon price to the Australian market.

When we supply Green LPG we offset the carbon associated with your LPG consumption, which is why you pay an additional amount for Green LPG.  However, the carbon scheme will still impact the cost and price of the LPG supplied to you.

Why should I still pay for Green LPG?

The carbon scheme is part of a long term plan to reduce carbon pollution in Australia - purchasing Green LPG is an easy way to reduce the impact of your emissions.
