Energy safety in your business
For any business owner, safety is a high priority. The following tips will help you make certain that all work using energy sources is carried out safely and responsibly.
LPG cylinder safety
Safe transportation
- When transporting bottled gas, the cylinders should be secured in an upright position and cylinder valves should be adequately plugged. In Queensland, 9kg and less cylinders must be fitted with a screw-in plastic cylinder plug
- If you transport gas cylinders in a passenger vehicle, don’t carry more than 13.5kg and, wherever possible, carry them in the boot
- When carrying bottled gas greater than 250 litres, you are required to placard your load
- Unload cylinders as soon as you reach your destination
Safe storage
- Store cylinders in an upright position, away from direct sunlight and ignition sources
- Make sure that petrol, flammable liquids and aerosols are stored well away from gas cylinders
- Provide appropriate fire-protection equipment for the size of your bottled gas storage
- To avoid confusion, store full cylinders separately to empty cylinders
Safe usage
- When connecting or disconnecting cylinders, make sure you are well away from any naked flame or ignition source
- When supplies of gas are not required, turn the cylinder off at the valve
- Always replace any cracked or damaged hoses
- Never fill domestic LPG cylinders with automotive LPG
- Gas cylinders must be tested by a qualified person at least every 10 years.
