Learn how to reduce your greenhouse gas emissions, and save money at the same time
There are many simple and smart ways you can save energy at home. Of course when you do, you’re not only saving money, but you’re helping the environment as well. And every little bit counts.
Heating
- Make sure you install insulation in your ceiling, under timber floors, and in walls.
- Only use heating when you need it. Don’t leave it running overnight, or when you go out.
- Choose heaters with thermostatic controls and timers.
- Use the ‘star’ energy rating system to help select energy efficient heaters.
Hot water
- Choose a high efficiency hot water system for your home.
- Insulate all external hot water pipes.
- Set your thermostat at moderate levels.
- Use a cold rinse for clothes washing and dish washing.
- Remember, a full bath costs more than a short shower.
Cooking
- A gas oven heats quickly, so there’s no need to pre-heat it unless your recipe dictates.
- Use thermometers and timers to avoid overcooking.
- Use steamers and pot dividers to cook all your vegetables at once, rather than using several gas rings or electric hotplates to cook them separately.
- Cover dishes to reduce cooking time and, therefore, the energy you use.
